Gadget Show Live

Upper Street Events - owners and organisers of Gadget Show Live, the NEC Birmingham show associated with the highly successful TV series.

The Brief

To provide and run an AV control system to maximise the audience experience during the seven live demonstrations per day in the circular Hub Theatre at the Gadget Show Live.

The Challenge

The key challenge was to immerse the audience in the user experience of a huge variety of gadgets – from small and/or static such as ‘phones, phablets, games, surround sound systems and coffee machines, to faster moving and larger objects such as robots and remote controlled toys - as well as enhance visibility of the celebrity presenters. With the added element of ensuring the delivery both visually and commercially, adhering to the strict budget provided.

The Successful Solution

The iMAG team installed 65” plasma screens flown around the theatre on a 9m circular truss which also housed all the sound and lighting kit so kept the theatre appearance sharp and neat.  We provided a comprehensive AV solution including the capability to accept direct input from all phones, phablets, tablets and computers through our complex matrix of processing and switching.

2 wireless HD cameras were used to zoom in on design and performance detail where screen output was not the sole key – including a £10,000 coffee machine whose physical output our crew thrived on!  The team installed a 360 degree audio solution for the celebrity presenters via headset and hand held microphones and created a bespoke lighting package to enhance the theatre’s dimensions and highlight the stage presentations.

We ensured that the Hub Theatre’s WiFi was “bullet-proof” in an environment where 85% of exhibitors were vying for the internet.  While this was our Technical Director’s third year at the Gadget Show Live, for the first time iMAG also stage-managed the show on Behalf of Upper Street Events. This included set-up for each of the daily sessions – from checking that all the gadgets were there, working and outputting the correct signal to being best placed and lit as well as directing the presenters themselves.
