The Speed Chess Championship Finals
When the world’s fastest minds collide, the stage must reflect the intensity of the competition
The Speed Chess Championship Finals brought together four of the most formidable players in modern chess: GM Magnus Carlsen, GM Alireza Firouzja, five-time SCC champion Hikaru Nakamura, and rising GM Denis Lazavik. Hosted at 180 Studios in London and delivered for Chess.com, the event required a technically precise, visually striking environment capable of supporting both a live audience and a global broadcast.
Magnus Carlsen successfully defended his title in a high-intensity final. Behind the scenes and working with 180 Studios’ in-house team, iMAG delivered a complete, integrated video solution across every area of the venue, ensuring seamless performance from first move to final checkmate.
The Challenge
The ambition was to create a premium esports stage that felt immersive in-room and translated flawlessly on camera. The production required a cohesive visual language across the main arena and additional spaces such as the hero tunnel and multiple lounge environments, all underpinned by robust control and distribution infrastructure.
The solution needed to be broadcast-ready, visually bold, and technically invisible in operation.
This was a multi-zone environment operating simultaneously, not a single-stage installation. The main stage LED, scenic elements, hero tunnel visuals, presenter returns, audience displays and lounge feeds all needed to work as one unified system. Integration was critical. Curved LED architecture on the back wall had to align perfectly with flat desk LED elements and scenic ROE Strip details. All content had to be mapped precisely and driven without latency. At the same time, fibre distribution systems were required to deliver consistent feeds across multiple hospitality spaces, maintaining the same premium viewing experience throughout the venue.
Working within a high-profile esports environment also demanded absolute operational precision. The production could not afford dropouts, inconsistencies or visual compromise. Every signal path was engineered for performance and redundancy.
The Solution
iMAG delivered a full-spectrum video solution across all areas of the event, combining high-resolution LED technology with advanced processing and professional-grade distribution.
On the main stage, Topaz 1.9mm curved LED panels formed the back wall, creating depth and visual impact while maintaining ultra-sharp resolution suitable for close camera work. The curvature enhanced the immersive feel of the arena and framed the players within a premium esports environment. Integrated into the desk design, Topaz 1.9mm flat panels allowed dynamic content to become part of the physical set, strengthening the visual identity of the final.
ROE Strip scenic elements added architectural detail and energy to the stage design. In-room viewing was supported by 65-inch displays, with additional 55-inch return monitors for presenters and 43-inch screens serving the downstage audience, ensuring clear sightlines and engagement throughout the space. Content playback and system control were powered by Disguise GX3 media servers, delivering frame-accurate performance and seamless integration with the wider production workflow.
The hero tunnel was designed to heighten anticipation during player walk-ons. A ROE Black Onyx 2.8mm LED back wall delivered high-resolution, high-contrast visuals ideal for both live viewing and broadcast capture. Complemented by ROE Strip scenic elements supported by custom rigging, the tunnel created a dynamic, immersive corridor that amplified the theatre of competition.
Beyond the arena, lounge environments were equipped with 98-inch, 85-inch and 65-inch displays, supported by fibre infrastructure and robust distribution systems. An integrated audio package ensured consistent sound quality across hospitality spaces, extending the premium event experience throughout 180 Studios.

The Speed Chess Championship Finals at 180 Studios delivered a compelling blend of sport, spectacle and technical precision. As Magnus Carlsen defended his title, the production environment performed flawlessly, supporting global broadcast audiences and in-room spectators alike. For Chess.com, the event achieved broadcast-ready visual quality, seamless multi-zone content delivery and a cohesive, high-impact stage design.
