Aramco Commerical

RD Content & McCann Worldwide for Aramco

When the agency McCann Worldwide developed a high-profile commercial for Aramco, they had a clear vision: to create a cinematic and visually stunning narrative using virtual production techniques. They required an advanced LED solution that could support ambitious storytelling, allow for quick-turnaround logistics, and maintain uncompromising image quality. To meet this challenge, iRD Content partnered with us on this high-impact project, which was aimed at global audiences and needed flawless execution.

The Challenge

The scope of the production was complex from the outset. Two fully independent yet interconnected sets needed to run simultaneously: one transporting viewers across a range of Aramco’s global operations, the other visualising a futuristic corporate environment. Each environment had to deliver a distinct visual identity while maintaining cinematic coherence.

The project had to be executed within a six-day window—two days to build, one day to pre-light, one rehearsal day, two shoot days, and a final de-rig. Configuration changes were frequent throughout production, requiring a system that could adapt in real time without interrupting momentum or quality. At every stage, the visuals had to perform in-camera, ready for editorial without dependence on post-production fixes. Previsualised content had to match what appeared on screen. There was no margin for error.

The Solution

Shooting at RD Studios in London, we took RD Content’s initial brief and early design concepts to develop a seamless LED workflow. This process involved translating the creative intent into detailed technical requirements and producing precise technical drawings. We worked closely with their teams to ensure continuous collaboration throughout the development. The result was a high-performance LED solution meticulously tailored to deliver on their vision. Using our inventory of ROE Black Pearl 2v2 LED screen, we constructed a sweeping 10-degree curved volume to create immersive environments that felt authentic on camera. The setup also included a wild wall built from our ROE Ruby C-LED panels, which offered unmatched image fidelity, with deep contrast and flexibility that supported the evolving shot lists.

These LED volumes were driven by disguise media servers and Brompton Technology processors, which allowed us to manage content playback, live adjustments, and embedded tracking seamlessly. We worked across Studio 3 and Studio 4 at RD Studios, operating two complete virtual environments simultaneously—each one monitored and refined by our dedicated disguise operators and LED technicians. Our pre-production process included detailed volume drawings and early content preloading, which ensured that everything was integrated and tested before cameras rolled.

As creative decisions evolved on set, iMAG’s team responded in real time, adapting LED configurations, adjusting playback, and optimising colour calibration to ensure that every shot looked as good through the lens as it did in previs. We also embedded tracking markers via disguise to allow for non-disruptive post-production enhancements in selected scenes. From start to finish, the delivery was precise, collaborative, and strongly aligned with both technical and creative objectives.

The Result

The final result was a visually rich, technically flawless commercial for Aramco, produced entirely in-camera, on location, and under intense time pressure. The combined efforts of McCann Worldwide, RD Studios, and iMAG brought together the best of agency vision, production infrastructure, and LED technology to deliver a standout campaign for a global brand.

Client Feedback

"Working alongside the team was fantastic. Despite the speed and complexity of our project, the iMAG team delivered a technically flawless shoot. They are experts in their field and can communicate with the wider team to create a seamless delivery of the vision."

In the world of filmmaking and content creation, it’s easy to get caught up in the debates: Is green screen outdated? Are LED volumes the only future? Will virtual production replace practical effects entirely? In this blog, iMAG’s Creative & Development Director Stephen Maddox explores why the smartest productions don’t choose between green screen or LED — they use both, blending tools to serve the story and deliver the best creative results. Filmmakers and content creators today face no shortage of strong opinions: “Green screen is dead.” “LED is the only way forward.” “Virtual production is replacing practical effects.” But these conversations often miss the point. Why It’s Not About Sides, It’s About Solutions At iMAG, we believe it’s not about choosing sides, it’s about choosing the right tools for the story you’re telling. On one of our recent projects, we used our LED volume for 90% of the shoot. But for the remaining 10%, we dropped in a green screen section precisely where the camera was aimed, allowing the post team the flexibility to dial in later the content yet captured. The rest of the volume still played plate content in-camera to light the scene authentically. On another project, we repurposed the LED wall to act as: A translite replacement for background depth, A green screen surface for keyed inserts, and A platform for in-camera VFX, all in one setup. By doing so, we avoided hauling in a truckload of fabric, lighting rigs, or set paint. In a third case, we simply built a green screen opposite the LED volume so the team could move seamlessly between both environments and maximise every shooting hour. It’s Not One Size Fits All: Adapting to Actors, Crews, and Environments Some actors dislike acting in an empty green box. Others get motion-sick in an LED volume with Ghost Frame or Frame Remapping. Some crews are experts at traditional compositing, while others thrive in Unreal Engine environments. These are not reasons to reject one technology over another. They’re reasons to plan smarter, and mix methods intentionally. Filmmaking isn’t about forcing every scene through the same process—it’s about staying agile, creative, and technically aware. In The West Wing, President Bartlet once said, “The trick isn't picking the right lever… It's using all of them.” The same applies to production. It’s not a matter of green screen or LED or pick your production process. The best work comes when we approach each scene with a full toolkit and the wisdom to know which lever to pull. At iMAG, we see green screen, LED volumes, virtual environments, practical sets, and physical builds as complementary, not competing. Wouldn’t you want to go into your next project with a full toolbox instead of empty-handed? Final Thought: Ask the Better Question The real question isn’t, “Which tool is best?” (My favourite question from The Office, “Which bear is best?”) The better question: What does this story need? What does this moment demand? How do we bring it to life—visually, emotionally, and efficiently? When we stop picking sides and start picking solutions, the work gets better. And that’s what matters most.
