SoCal meets UK LED Virtual Production

All the Old Knives (Amazon/Lionsgate) in partnership with Treehouse Digital - Film & TV

This project was filmed during the peak of COVID with the situation of how to get the cast/crew to Southern California and filming during golden hour for long periods of time when travel restrictions were at their hardest. The solution was bringing Southern California to the UK and make golden hour last all day if needed.

VFX Producer, Tim Field says:

Throughout this project it was a delight to see how the various VFX teams worked together to achieve a photo-real environment for real-time principle photography. This relied on the ingenuity and expertise of all involved to make the approach a success

How we created the set...

Blending our state-of-the-art mobile LED virtual production facility using our ROE Black Onyx 2 matched with the Brompton SX-40 and driven by our disguise media servers, the team also had to build a massive, curved screen with no weight loading in the roof. To do this, the team engineered a way for it to all be ground supported yet hold the epic size (5.5m by 24m).

We were able to utilise filming plates that were captured from Southern California to bring Southern California to the UK.

Delivering a successful project...

A pivotal aspect of the collaboration was the construction of the custom LED volume, designed with precision to meet the project's specific needs. iMAG Displays' unique approach to design, tailored to the exact requirements, location, and duration, was integral to the project's success.

You can have the best kit in the world, the slickest pitch deck, and a glittering showreel, but if you don’t understand what your clients really need when the pressure’s on, you’ll never be their first call again. After more than twelve years working across the creative, brand, and production landscape, the iMAG team has been in hundreds of briefing conversations. And while every project, client, and budget brings its own personality, one thing is consistent: there’s almost always more going on beneath the surface. Here’s what they rarely say out loud, but actually really want from their AV partner. 1. “Make me look good to my client.” Whether you’re working with a producer, a creative agency, or even an internal comms team, there's usually another layer above them. A brand director. A Head of Production. A CMO. What they want isn’t just technical brilliance (though that’s always a non-negotiable). They want you to make them look like the hero. That means calm in chaos, fast fixes, respectful collaboration, and no surprises on site. At iMAG, we get that. We operate like an extension of your team - invisible when needed, front-footed when it counts.
